What are my options with liposuction surgery?

Liposuction ("lipoplasty"), which is also known as liposculpture, is typically performed through tiny incisions in a target area using a long metal rod (cannula). While the cannula is hooked up to a vacuum pump, Dr. Mendieta uses the cannula to maneuver around the focus area and remove unwanted fat cells. Liposuction may be ideal for the upper arms, chest area, stomach, lower back, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Based on the individual patient's needs, a personalized treatment plan will be created and our Miami plastic surgeon will determine which technique will be most appropriate.

Dr. Mendieta offers tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), power assisted liposuction (PAL), and SmartLipoT. In most cases, Dr. Mendieta uses the tumescent method; the target area is injected with a fluid comprised of salt water solution, an anesthetic, and a vasoconstrictor. Bleeding, bruising, and swelling are greatly reduced with this medicated solution. During the UAL technique, the cannula has an ultrasonic tip that liquefies the fat in order to facilitate removal. Should Dr. Mendieta choose to perform the PAL method instead, he will use a motorized cannula to remove the excess fat. This type of procedure is typically used in more fibrous areas, such as the upper abdomen, love handles, back, and breasts.
